A native of Ann Arbor, I received my B.A. in History from the University of Michigan in 1964, then came to New York to do graduate work at Columbia University with Richard Hofstadter and Eric McKitrick. I completed my Ph.D. in 1973, soon after joining the History Department of Brooklyn College. I have been at Brooklyn ever since, and am now Distinguished Professor of History.
